Men’s Veterans and Novice Singles Championship 2019
The 2019/20 Veterans Singles Championship finals were remarkable for a couple of reasons, one being the absence of all of the original favourites for winning the event. The other reason was playing the final under our new lights.
The semi-finals were played in the late afternoon and Les Coyne had a surprisingly easy win over Graham Steele. Marius Burgler had a slightly tougher task in beating the club stalwart Bill Warner. Both Graham and Bill had displayed great form in reaching the semi-finals but unfortunately couldn’t sustain their run.
A large crowd gathered on the club veranda to watch Marius and Les battle it out for the Veterans’ title and they weren’t disappointed. Les established an early substantial lead but Marius didn’t give up, in spite of a couple of injudicious drives.
The game was in the balance to the very end, with both players demonstrating great bowling skills. Marius lived up to his namesake when he stole away from Les in the last end to capture the Championship.
Meanwhile, John Mitchell and Carl Krauter were fighting it out in the Novice singles Championship. They were evenly matched for the first half of the game but Carl gradually drew ahead and became this season’s Novice Champion.
May thanks to Keith Guelfi and Keith Fleming for acting as markers in the afternoon and evening. Thanks to Bob Plater for acting as umpire in the afternoon and Peter Brophy for taking it on in the evening.
More thanks to the Mixed Scrounger organisers for giving up A Green so we could properly showcase the Men’s Veterans and Novice Singles Championships.
